Considered one of the oldest Engineering disciplines, Civil Engineering had its earliest practice commenced in the Stone age and has been growing ever since. Civil engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles for solving the problems of society, and its history is intricately linked to advances in understanding of physics and mathematics throughout history. In comparison with other branches of Engineering, Civil Engineering has the broadest and most visible range and application. The entire infrastructural framework of any modern nation which includes mighty power plants, dams, airports, sea ports, highways, inland waterways and industrial plants is the contribution of Civil Engineers. Civil Engineering professionals are also engaged in building an unending array of urban structures such as commercial complexes, skyscrapers, tunnels, bridges, roads, urban rapid transport systems, sports arenas and so on. The research organizations and industries that work in the frontier areas of Civil Engineering are in constant need of highly skilled and scientifically oriented manpower. Such manpower can be made available only through flexible, adaptive and progressive training programs and a cohesive interaction between the research organizations, academicians and industries.
The Civil Engineering Department was started at VKCET in 2011. The primary objective of the Civil Engineering department is to prepare the students to be competent in the fundamentals of Engineering, so that they are capable of analysing, designing and describing Civil Engineering systems and processes. The department also strives to ensure that each student is aware of the social and economic implications of engineered projects so that they become responsible and ethical citizens and professionals. The department enrols sixty students for the B.Tech. programme every year.
Dr. BENNY JOSEPH heads the department of Civil Engineering at VKCET. He has over 23 years of experience in teaching and administration. Previously, he had served as the Professor of Department of Civil Engineering at the TKM College of Engineering, Kollam.
